Northeast Grid Reliability Project?-?New Jersey
Kiewit was selected by Public Service Electric & Gas (PSEG) for engineering and procurement services on the Northeast Grid Reliability Project. The project included upgrading existing tranmission lines, converting substation configurations and adding underground circuit to increase capacity while reducing transmission system congestion.
The project included two substation retrofits. The Athenia Switching Station was converted from a six breaker radial bus configuration to a seven-bay, double-breaker, double-bus configuration. The project included the design of one 230kV 5000 kcmil XLPE underground transmission line. Saddlebrook Substation was upgraded from a radial bus configuration to a six position GIS ring bus configuration. Saddlebrook Substation also included the design of four circuits of 230kV XLPE underground transmission circuit. Kiewit selected the route; sized the cable; designed the duct bank, termination and structure design.
The project also included rebuilding existing 138kV transmission towers to new double-circuit 230kV steel monopole and lattice tower structures within the existing right of way. Kiewit led the team's foundation design using concrete-capped and steel-capped helical steel piles.
