Hamilton Avenue Moveable Bridge?-?Brooklyn, N.Y.
The rehabilitation of the Hamilton Avenue Bascule Bridge over the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn replaced two parallel single-leaf bascule bridges. The bridges remained operational throughout construction with the use of a Kiewit-designed hydraulic cylinder system. This system used hydraulic cylinders attached to the tail girders to pull the bridge open for marine traffic and then push it back to the closed position. Work was staged so that traffic is shifted onto one leaf while the other leaf is replaced over the course of a 60-day window.
In addition to the total reconstruction of two bascule spans, project work included the replacement of all bridge-operating machinery; repairs and modifications to the existing control house and gate-tender's house; new traffic control devices; construction of a new fender system; new electrical wiring and controls; and construction of a new generator building.
