Verrazano Narrows Bridge Structural Retrofits?-?Brooklyn and Staten Island, N.Y.
In November 2007, Kiewit completed structural improvements to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, located at the mouth of Upper New York Bay. The $68 million project included removing aluminum anchorage access plates at the lower-level roadway and sealing the openings with concrete; installing steel maintenance doors; and installing shielding panels at the underside of the deck and on the main cable strands inside the anchorage walls.
Crews removed and replaced existing fencing and installed hydraulic barricade systems at the Staten Island and Brooklyn anchorage bases, along with steel pilings and netting and fencing at both tower bases. Main cable shielding was installed on the interior cables at the anchorages and at the mid-span. Crews also removed and replaced fan fencing on the main cable; installed shields surrounding each set of four-suspender ropes on the interior cable suspenders; and strengthened the tower cell and tower exterior on the upper and lower roadway levels.
